冰川物质平衡观测网点分别在东支和西支冰川消融区表面布设从冰舌开始自下而上布设A—I等9个横剖面各横剖面一般在冰面上等距离布设3根测杆测点平均密度为29根/km2。近年来由于冰舌末端消融强烈以及退缩之故使得东支A剖面和西支A、B、C剖面的冰面地形变得越来越陡峻尤其西支东侧冰舌更是冰悬壁削冰裂隙密布涉及这些区域的冰面测杆的布设和观测行为都非常危险尤其是西支C剖面东侧冰面裂隙密布布设测杆和测杆观测的难度也越来越大这些断面测杆布设的数量亦因此减少到1个点到2个点西支C剖面。积累区资料以雪坑观测结果获得。

冰层温度是研究冰川物理状态的重要指标2007年通过对1号冰川7个20 m温度钻孔的观测恢复了自1985年以来中断了30余年的冰层温度的测量。2007年10月测得乌鲁木齐河源1号冰川C点钻孔点温度图73与1983年10月测温数据相比温度大约升高了1℃说明冰层温度有较大升高冰川冷储减少对气候反应灵敏度增强。

2006年以前冰川运动的观测频率为每年一次本年度加大了对1号冰川运动速度的观测观测频率为每月一次。通过对花杆的季节观测发现相比别的月份7、8、9月的运动速度相对较大而西支的更大。总体上的冰川运动速度符合以前的观测规律但是速度又有增大的趋势。
